Canada Study Permit in 2026: Requirements, Attestation Letters and Proof of Funds
A study permit allows you to study at a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI). Canada limits the number of study permit applications it accepts each year, and the rules have tightened since 2024, so careful preparation matters more than it used to.
What most applicants need
- A letter of acceptance from a DLI. A school that is not a DLI does not qualify.
- A provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) confirming your province or territory has space for you under its share of the cap. It must be issued in the same year you apply, so a letter from an earlier year cannot be used.
- Proof of funds for your first year of tuition, living costs, and travel. IRCC updates the living-cost amount every year, so check the current figure before you plan. Approved financial documents can include bank statements and a guaranteed investment certificate (GIC).
- Biometrics and, in some cases, a medical exam.
- A clear study plan that shows why this program fits your background and goals.
The Student Direct Stream, a faster route used by some countries, is no longer available.
The 2026 cap
IRCC expects to issue up to 180,000 permits to applicants who need a PAL/TAL in 2026, and will accept up to 309,670 applications from them. Each province decides how to share its spaces among its institutions.
Who does not need an attestation letter
Exemptions include: - master's and doctoral students at a public DLI, from January 1, 2026 - primary and secondary school students - students extending a permit at the same institution and level - participants in the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot
Why applications are refused
Officers look at whether you can pay for your studies, whether the program makes sense for your background, and whether you are likely to leave Canada when your stay ends. Weak documents, unexplained gaps, and a study plan that doesn't match your history are common problems. A previous refusal makes careful preparation even more important.
Extending your study permit
Apply before your current permit expires. If you are changing school or program, check whether you need a new attestation letter.
Get help from a licensed consultant
I can review your acceptance letter, funds and study plan before you apply. Only authorized representatives can charge a fee to represent you, so confirm your representative's licence on the CICC register. No consultant can guarantee an approval.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a PAL to apply? Most applicants do. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt in 2026, along with a few other groups.
Can I use last year's attestation letter? No. For 2026 you need a letter issued between January 1 and December 31, 2026.
How much money do I need to show? Your first-year tuition plus the current IRCC living-cost amount, plus travel. Check IRCC for the current figure.
Can I work while studying? Study permits have conditions on work. Check the rules that apply to your program before you rely on income.
