Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in 2026: Who Qualifies

The post-graduation work permit is an open work permit for graduates of eligible Canadian programs. It lets you work for almost any employer and gain Canadian experience that can count toward permanent residence.

Language requirement

You must prove your English or French with an approved test in all four abilities: - Bachelor's, master's or doctoral graduates: CLB 7 (or NCLC 7 in French). - College, polytechnic and other non-university graduates: CLB 5 (or NCLC 5 in French).

Field of study requirement

If your study permit application was submitted on or after November 1, 2024 and you graduated from a college or other non-degree program, your program must be in an eligible field of study, one linked to occupations in long-term shortage. Degree graduates are not subject to this rule. Check IRCC's current list against your program's classification code, and do this before you choose a program. IRCC announced on January 15, 2026 that it would not add or remove any fields of study during 2026.

Other conditions

From PGWP to permanent residence

Skilled work (NOC TEER 0 to 3) on a PGWP can count toward the Canadian Experience Class if the hours and requirements are met.
