Parents and Grandparents Program: New Intake Is Paused
On July 15, 2026, IRCC paused new intake under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). It will not accept new interest-to-sponsor forms or invite new sponsors until further notice. IRCC continues to process applications already received, and plans to approve up to 15,000 people for permanent residence through the program in 2026.
What this means
- If you already applied: your application continues to be processed.
- If you have not applied: you cannot start a new application until IRCC reopens the program. There is no announced date.
- Programs like this can reopen, so check IRCC for updates.
The Super Visa alternative
Parents and grandparents can visit their children and grandchildren for up to five years at a time with a Super Visa, which allows multiple entries for up to ten years. It does not lead to permanent residence. See our Super Visa guide.
Other options
Depending on your situation, a family member may have other routes, such as skilled worker programs, a provincial nomination, or a humanitarian and compassionate application in exceptional cases. These are covered elsewhere on this site.
